Franklin County Municipal Court Judge Teresa Liston presented the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation’s Denis Murphy Award to Jeanne Deimling Johns of Advocates for Basic Legal Equality. The Award was presented on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 during the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation’s quarterly board meeting.

“Jeanne exemplifies the professional and personal qualities that make her an outstanding legal services advocate, working diligently to improve access to justice for the poor,” Judge Liston said in announcing this year’s recipient.

The Denis Murphy Award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding leadership and advocacy on behalf of legal aid clients in the State of Ohio. The Award was created in 1998 in honor of OLAF’s founding board president, Denis J. Murphy.

“Jeanne has a proven track record of success and is always the first to support other attorneys who possess the same level of commitment and dedication to legal services. We know of no other person who better exemplifies an absolute commitment to furthering the mission of providing legal services to the poor and the spirit of Denis Murphy,” state Joseph Tafelski, ABLE Executive Director, and Kevin Mulder, LSNO Executive Director, in their letter nominating Jeanne.

The Ohio Legislature created the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation in 1994 as a response to the serious deficiencies in meeting the civil legal needs of all Ohioans. In partnership with the state and local bar associations, elected officials, and local legal aid providers, OLAF coordinates resource development, provides efficient distribution of legal aid funds, and promotes innovative approaches to ensure that every person is treated fairly and is able to obtain his or her rights, regardless of income.
